Shipping struggle during Covid19

Long gone are the days when we used to have shipping struggles.

Last year (2020) was a tough year for BicycleBooth and we want to shed light on the reasons behind the shipping hurdles that we faced and how we overcame them.

And as mentioned in the title, we blame it on COVID-19 and the lockdowns that took place across the globe!

At Bicycle Booth, your satisfaction is our first and foremost concern. As a result, we believe providing insight into our day to day struggles and transparency into our business practices will build the trust every business seeks between a brand and their customer (You!)

Working tirelessly around the clock, our team quickly identified the source of the multiple issues and worked actively to implement a fix to minimize delays.

Was COVID19 the only problem for the shipping delays?

 Yes, it was the main problem but that’s not only it. but unfortunately, not the only problem.

During the peak of the pandemic from March 2020 to May 2020, each problem gave birth to a new problem, producing a ripple effect.

It all started when our factory was ordered to close down to completely pause all operations until the virus was under control, which had an impact on pending orders and inventory levels. Luckily, it did not last long and we got through it within a month's time.

Although the factory was able to open up again, we were then faced with a new problem with limited staff being allowed at the manufacturing plant to ensure social distancing. So even though we were operational, employees were being overworked and under stress with not only old orders which were pending for a month but also new orders which could not be attended to.

To resolve this, we need to work around the clock and expand to a bigger factory which would allow for more employees to work in a safe environment, socially distanced. You could imagine the struggles of moving an entire factory and setting up new equipment.

Unfortunately the struggles do not end there...

Once we got over the hurdle of internal operations and systems, then came the logistics part of it all.

All Airports were completely swamped and overwhelmed. With lockdowns taking place around the world, airports closed and only a handful of commercial airlines operating, shipments were being delayed for 1-2 weeks!

To make things worse, once shipments arrived, they were then being held for another 2-3 weeks due to the huge amount of shipments being shipped to North America. The biggest airports hit were LAX and NY and all Canadian Provinces.

Is Covid19 the only problem for shipping delays?

Our Customer Service and Logistics team strived day and night for the quality check on every order and to reassure all customers that we will guarantee their orders reach them or their money back.

Just imagine the amount of orders that were placed during peak Cycling Season, and the number of emails we received with customers complaining “where’s my orders, it's been 1 month!”. As COVID-19 panic was at its peak, the stress levels in our business operations were also at an all time high.

Regardless, we quickly hired additional staff members to maintain our best customer service.

As I am sure many are aware, during the peak of COVID-19 with lockdowns taking place across th world, online ordering was also the new trend as it provided the most safest method of shopping. With online shopping also comes returns and exchanges. As a result, due to post offices in the USA and Canada being overwhelmed, returns and exchanges were also experiencing delays (Which we had no control over).

From just reading our struggles above, you could imagine the struggles and pain COVID-19 had on our day to day business operations.

Fortunately the struggles did not last long and we were able to survive, as a business. Now that everything's almost back to normal, we are way past the days of shipping struggles, Hallelujah!

 

To prove our point, all orders are typically packed in less than 24 hours after the order is placed.

And that’s how it goes usually, this is the standard:

The shipping during business days for Canada, USA, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Denmark, Japan, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, France takes about 10 to 15 days.

Whereas on the other hand, worldwide to all the other countries, it takes 15 to 30 during business days.

  • Just stumbled upon your site and found my way to this blog post. As a brand manager, it’s so nice to see companies who get the basic concept that talking honestly to your customers is paramount. Glad to see you survived the struggle of 2020, and I look forward to placing my first order.

    Also, I just want to say it’s nice to be able to support a Canadian company. I bought a stereo from a very small Montreal manufacturer last year, and yes there were problems at US Customs, but they were so helpful that I found myself becoming more endeared to the company, rather than annoyed.

    Lastly, I feel it can’t be said enough, many of us in the US look up (pun intended) to our friends in Canada, and are thankful we have such fantastic ‘neighbors’. Extra lastly; Canada has a great legacy of cyclists: Lovell, Stieda, Bauer, and now Woods… maybe there’s an opportunity to create a “Legends of Canada” jersey?
