Annie Londonderry: The First Woman To Bicycle Around The World

Women Cycling was not common in the 1800s.

For women, It was seen as an unsafe activity and not very feminine by many. Despite these social norms, a woman who went by the name of Annie Londonderry left her legacy with her groundbreaking cycling trip around the world in 1894.

As the story goes, she was provoked to take on the challenge after overhearing men in a bar talk down upon women’s cycling abilities, to the point where they even wagered a bet that she took them up on.

Annie Londonderry’s world tour and what she experienced is not history in the books.
